Tips for the Casual Cyclist’s Vacation
Written by Bike Tour GuruNot everyone is a competitive cyclist looking to crush the next climb and leave their legs burning in agony. A desire to enjoy the region in which you are biking is just as valid a reason for bike travel.
You can fully appreciate cycling as a hobby without the desire to conquer cols or become the KoM. For those types of riders, there are still plenty of reasons why a bike tour makes a rewarding and wonderful vacation. Casual cyclists, take heed: these seven tips and tricks will ensure a no-pressure bike tour that’s perfectly suited to your level of riding.

Go Electric
If you’re a casual rider, consider choosing an easy-going tour, such as one of DuVine’s Level 1 or 2 bike trips. But if you simply must visit a destination with challenging terrain, opt for an e-bike to make your dreams come true. The pedal-assist motor and adjustable level of assistance allow you to challenge yourself without fear of losing steam. Use the motor as a safety net when you’re struggling up a tough hill, or rely on its power so you can focus on enjoying the ride.

Think Beyond Biking
If six days of cycling seems intimidating, consider a well-designed +Adventure Tour with other activities. Itineraries in Zion National Park or the Dolomites mix hiking in with cycling. Explore by horseback and snorkel through the sparkling blue Adriatic Sea on a Puglia Family Tour, or swim and sun on the shores of Italy’s largest lake on our Verona Family Bike + Adventure Tour. Got something else in mind? Customizing your own multi-sport itinerary is as easy as dreaming it up.

Skip a Ride to Follow your Bliss
Review the trip itinerary in advance. If you know you will only want to ride half the day’s route, let us help you make alternate plans. Treat yourself to a massage at the hotel spa, spend an afternoon lounging by the pool, or take a day to explore the town instead. No part of your vacation is mandatory, and we’re here to help you make it your own.

Take a Lift
Do as much riding as you can or want, then hop in our van for the rest. Our expert guides stay close by with van support to give you a lift if you need it. There’s no shame in hitching a ride, and you won’t be the only one! DuVine guests take advantage of the van service on almost every tour. Join the guide who’s driving for some good music, insightful conversation, and healthy snacks. It can be great one-on-one time with the valuable resource of a guide’s local knowledge, and a time to ask questions that might have slipped your mind while you were working hard on the bike.

Stop and Smell the Roses
Use cycling as an opportunity to immerse yourself in the staggering landscapes, intoxicating fragrances, and sounds of the countryside. This is your vacation, not a race or a training camp. Take a water break to catch your breath and admire a beautiful view. Pedal at a pace where you can chat with fellow guests or companions, make friends with the cows you pass by, pick persimmons from a roadside tree, and stop to take pictures of a beautiful red poppy. However fast or slow you ride, relish the accomplishment of fully experiencing the region using your senses.

Be Comfortable
Ask the guides for basic bike fitting advice and speak up if something doesn’t feel right. Small adjustments like the tilt of your saddle, the height of your seat, and the angle of the handlebars can make a huge difference. Keep your bum happy by investing in pair of quality bike shorts and bringing your own saddle. And if you’re new to cycling, ask a guide to ride with you and share personalized tips and observations about your cycling form.

Get Moving
Try to do as much cardio before your trip as possible—it’s a lack of cardio fitness that usually requires riders to stops for a rest. Climb the stairs to your office, take your dog out for a long walk, or go for a swim. Simulate the experience of your bike tour with a week of spinning classes or find a cycling group to ride with. It will pay off on tour when you feel stronger and more confident on the bike!
